A while back, I was at my son’s high school basket ball game…. they were playing for first place in a tournament so it was a very exciting night… I sat in the middle of the gym this night, because 1) I saw a familiar face from our town 2) there were open seats around him 3) the last two games I went to I ended up on the wrong end of the court….. and this way I concluded that I would not have to move in order to be with the fans of my team.
Well… the game started by introducing the two teams… I of course stood up to clap as they introduced the starting 5 as we do at each game. Being in the middle … I still felt a part of the home team crowd as I stood up because they were just an aisle away….
The opposing team was now being announced, and EVERYONE sitting around Kyle and I, stood up to welcome their starting 5 to the floor….as we felt smaller than we did just a few minutes before…. we looked at each other and without saying anything we both knew… this may be a long an interesting game!
As the game progressed it was an experience for sure. I …. not knowing much about fouls, rules, and the in’s and out’s of the game …. could only trust that the ref’s knew what was right and what was wrong… I guess, sometimes ignorance is bliss because since I don’t know all of the inside scoop on the game… I do know at least the basics… you dribble the ball… you make a basket… that’s 2 points….. from the half circle line its 3 points….and I do know what the traveling sign means ;~).
Now…..the other team’s fans, however, was not so much in agreement of the calls that were made and were being quite vocal about their assumptions.
It was very interesting to me how 2,3,4, or 20 people, sitting in nearly the same seat, with the same view, can see things totally opposite of each other….depending on who’s side you were on, the ref’s always seem to be favoring the other team… not calling fair…. either on purpose or by accident.
But….It really didn’t matter how loud the crowd got…. or how irate the coaches got…. when the call had been made, it was not going to change….!
I have decided that I would not want that job of being a ref for love nor money! In EVERY game they are going to make many in the stands very unhappy and a very few somewhat pleased .
I wonder…..do they ever feel like they have to please everyone?
Do they ever doubt their skills in game calling? or…….Do they just get hard and block everyone out…?
Life… is like that game… We sometimes find ourselves smack dab in the middle of the enemies camp…cheering for our “side”… our faith…. our beliefs….. our God…
There are always going to be those who will call things ……unfair…those who will try to influence the “calls” the ref makes in our life… to shake us and to make us doubt our own judgement… to make us feel like we need to please people… to get them to like us……. or to just plain shut them up….!!!
God gave us His Spirit to us to act as an Umpire (ref) in our lives..
Col 3:15 AMP. And let the peace (soul harmony which comes) from Christ rule (act as umpire continually ) in your hearts (deciding and settling with finality all questions that arise in your minds, in that peaceful state) to which as (members of Christ’s)one body you were also called (to live), (giving praise to God always).
Listen to that Peace in your life…
THAT my friend is the direction you should go…
Not knowing all the in’s and out’s of life sometimes is a good thing….. We DO however need to know the basics…. we need to know what is right and what is wrong… to Love God with all our hearts, souls and minds… to treat others the way we want them to treat us… to ask Jesus in our hearts…. the rest… we have to depend on the call of the “ref”…. the Leading of the Holy Spirit…. Trust Him to make the right call.
He will ALWAYS make the right call in our life…
hmmmmm maybe He is a bit partial to one team over the other….
